Facebook working on new app to help you ‘Find your friends’

Not only does Facebook show you what your friends are doing in sometimes too graphic detail, it is also working on app that will help users track the location of their friends on their smartphones, says a report in Bloomberg.

The report quotes two people with knowledge of the matter and states that the app could be released by mid-March. The purpose of the app is to help users find nearby friends and would run even when the program isn’t open on a handset, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren’t public, according to the report.

The app is likely to compete with Apple’s Find My Friends and Math Camp Inc’s Highlight, which also track user locations to help them find friends or places of interest.

In 2012 Facebook had launched a Find Friends Nearby feature which would allow users on mobile and web to connect with people who had opened the page and were close by.

The feature was working on both Android and iOS apps. However Facebook later pulled off the feature stating that, “This wasn’t a formal release – this was something that a few engineers were testing. With all tests, some get released as full products, others don’t. ”
